JDS Products, Traded Fairly that benefit all involved.

All of the products that bear the Traded Ethically logo have been brought to sale in the UK within very strict guidelines of international trade.

It is very important to us as a company that our trading with foreign suppliers is done fairly and honestly with a good deal of benefit for them as businesses and their workforce.


Before we mark a product with the traded ethically logo we conduct checks to ensure that our strict trading conditions are upheld.
 

No Child Labour is Tolerated

Fair working conditions are provided to their workers which include:
  • Fair rates of pay that allow for a maintained lifestyle for the worker.
  • Reasonable expected working hours with overtime being optional and not compulsory.
  • Safe working conditions that due not expose workers to undue risk of injury or health deterioration.
  • Policies that do not unjustly penalise workers for making mistakes by forcing unpaid labour to rectify them.
Dealing with foreign companies that produce our goods we always ensure that the following policies are followed:
  • Prices are not excessively negotiated downwards.
  • Fair production times are allowed for order delivery.
  • Any mistakes in production are worked through in conjunction with us instead of imposing fines and penalties.
We work in this way because when a company demands a factory meets an unreasonable deadline workers are often forced to work extended shifts, through the night and with very few days off. We do not try to haggle prices down because this can result in a factory owner paying his workers less in order to meet the lower price expectation of his overseas buyer. We work through any mistakes or production issues in a reasonable way to ensure workers are not forced to repeat production tasks a second time with no pay for doing so.

How do we know that our factories adhere to these standards?
When dealing with factories 1000s of miles away it can be hard to know exactly what it going on out there.

We make four trips each year to our factories to carry out checks on the following:
  • Workers are still being paid a reasonable & sustainable rate of pay.
  • No children are present on any production lines.
  • Fair working hours are being adhered to.
  • Workers seem happy and not suffering any forms of abuse.
  • That the prices we are paying is allowing for overheads to be met, workers paid fairly and a reasonable profit made.
  • That production methods are effective, efficient and working well to maintain our quality standards.
  • That non toxic materials are used as much as possible and where toxic materials used adequate protection is provided.
We strongly believe that a happy & well looked after worker will make a product that meets the standards we expect. We want care and time to be taken when producing our products. We know that this will not come from overworked, abused, and underpaid workers.
What if a product on the JDS site does not bear the logo, does this mean exploitation has occurred in it’s production?
For products on our site that do not bear the logo there is no need to worry that unfair trading has occurred. This simply means that although we have selected a reputable manufacturer we have not been able to make the four annual visits, check their factories and workers out and conduct reviews of their policies. We are endeavouring to make sure that in the near future all of our products come from sources that are worthy of the TRADED ETHICALLY logo.
